Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) Fruit Extract

Sea buckthorn (Hippophaes rhamnoides) is a shrub native to cold-temperate regions of Europe and Asia, stretching from the West Coast of Europe through Northern Europe, Russia, Tibet, India, China and Mongolia. The botanical name Hippophaes is from the Greek words "Hippo", horse, and "Phaos", to shine, and comes from stories about ancient Greeks feeding sea buckthorn to horses and noticing the horses became healthier and had shinier coats. Legend has it that Genghis Khan used sea buckthorn to keep his army healthy and horses prepared for battle. The fruits are small yellow-orange berries which have a variety of antioxidant compounds. They contain vitamin C, vitamin E (tocopherols), a mixture of carotenoids (α- and β-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein, lycopene, and β-cryptoxanthin), minerals, and polyphenols, particularly flavonoids. Their combination of nutrients is one of the reasons they have been described as a super fruit. One of the traditional uses of sea buckthorn fruit has been for supporting skin health.*

SEA BUCKTHORN FRUIT FORMULATING PRINCIPLES AND RATIONALE

We selected a Sea Buckthorn fruit extract, which provides a standardized amount of flavones (a type of flavonoid). Flavonoids tend to follow hormetic dosing principles (see Qualia Dosing Principles), which means that beyond a certain serving, there may be no additional functional benefits gained (and sometimes there can be lesser benefits at higher servings compared with lower servings). We expect Sea Buckthorn fruit extract to be complementary with other fruit extracts in our formulation and selected the serving based on it being part of a super fruit blend.*
