Solnul™ Resistant Potato Starch

Solnul™ is a source of resistant starch obtained from potatoes. Resistant starch is starch that's “resistant” to digestion (our digestive enzymes don’t break it down), which allows it to be used as food for good gut bacteria. Starchy foods have been in the human diet for tens of thousands of years. The main difference today is that starchy food products are often refined to improve their taste, appearance, and texture. But highly refined starches lose nearly all their nutrients and fiber, depriving gut microbes of one of their favorite foods—resistant starch. Resistant starch reaches the colon undigested like insoluble fiber and thereby supports digestive health. But resistant starch is also highly fermentable like soluble fiber and readily used by the gut microbiota, thereby having a prebiotic action that supports the growth of beneficial microbes [1]. So resistant starch is a type of fiber that provides the benefits of both insoluble and soluble fibers. Unmodified (sometimes described as raw) potato starch is one of the highest sources of resistant starch.*

Solnul™ FORMULATION  PRINCIPLES AND RATIONALE

There are five types of resistant starch (RS1, RS2, RS3, RS4, and RS5). RS1 is physically protected starch found in outer parts of whole grains or seeds. RS2 are raw starch granules found in uncooked potato and green (unripe) bananas—RS2 starch is lost through cooking or ripening. RS3 is retrograde starch; it’s created after foods with starches like white rice or potatoes are cooked and then cooled (cooling restores resistant starch lost during cooking). RS4 are chemically-modified starches and RS5 are starch-lipid complexes (both are man-made resistant starches). We included SolnulTM because it: (1) is a FODMAP friendly fiber, so can be a part of a low FODMAP diet; and (2) contains 60% resistant starch as RS2 (resistant starch, and especially RS2 are low in the American diet [2,3]).* The RS2 consists of ~20% amylose and 80% amylopectin, which form raw starch granules that are exceptionally resistant to digestive enzymes and reach the colon relatively intact, where Bifidobacterium (SolnulTM is “bifidogenic”) and Ruminococcus (a next generation probiotic) are generally recognized as the primary types of beneficial bacteria that feed on it [4]. We chose our suggested serving (3.5 g), because this amount has increased the relative abundance of both Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia (another next generation probiotic) [5].*
