True or False: You Should Take Senolytics Everyday. What The Research Says

What is the best way to take senolytic supplements? Should you take them everyday or intermittently? And why? Let us give you some answers.

We recommend taking Qualia Senolytic on two consecutive days once a month, i.e., with an interval of about 4 weeks where you won’t take any Qualia Senolytic capsules.*

We recommend intermittent use—a “hit and run” approach, as some experts call it—because it is the way senolytics are most commonly used in clinical studies to support healthy aging. For example, in ongoing clinical trials sponsored by the Mayo Clinic that are using the senolytic compound fisetin to support healthy aging (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03675724, NCT03430037), it is being administered orally for 2 consecutive days.

The reason why these studies use an intermittent protocol is because it is the approach shown to best suit the characteristics of senescent cells. Senescent cells, also known as “zombie cells”, are normal cells that, in response to cellular stress, have stopped dividing but remain active. Cellular senescence is part of healthy tissue function and can have protective roles and beneficial effects. In normal conditions, senescent cells are promptly removed by the immune system, but with aging, immune clearance becomes less effective, allowing senescent cells to linger indefinitely in tissues. As they gradually accumulate, senescent cells can interfere with normal tissue function and contribute to the aging process.*

Senescent cells are created in, and removed from, tissues constantly throughout life (and over shorter periods of time like a month). The goal of taking senolytic supplements is not to abolish senescence—that’s undesirable because senescence has beneficial physiological roles; we need it as a stress response that supports tissue health. The goal of taking senolytic supplements is to support a healthy shift in favor of removal so that senescent cells don’t accumulate in tissues. Since senescent cells accumulate slowly, this should not require daily intake of senolytic supplements.*

Think about this “hit and run” approach as being a bit like how you might approach pruning a plant: pruning is something you’d want to do periodically to help a plant stay healthy, but not every day, or you’ll end up hurting the plant. You may also think about taking senolytic supplements as being akin to a water fast or detox protocol, which are not something you’d do every day, but rather something you’d do for a few days periodically to support your health goals.* Learn more about Qualia formulations.
