Winner of the Media Ecology Association’s first Neil Postman award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity, Dr. Douglas Rushkoff is an author, teacher, and documentarian who focuses on the ways people, cultures, and institutions create, share, and influence each other’s values. He is Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at CUNY/Queens, where he founded the Laboratory for Digital Humanism. He is a columnist for Medium, technology and media commentator for CNN, a research fellow at the Institute for the Future, and a lecturer on media, technology, culture and economics around the world.

A fascinating discussion; took me back to the best of undergrad, when I was poring over Edward Said, experimenting with LSD, and exploring sigil magick myself. Wonderful to know these conversations are still happening. The idea of memes and logos as sigils; the idea of Q as a self-writing choose your own adventure script with a life of its own; and the nihilism of billionaires racing to survive a downfall while propagating its very genesis.. Wonderful stuff. And the thesis - as I took it - how about we try being here now and working to create a reality for ourselves and our community that moves away from this apocalyptic future, rather than using the Secret to fan its flames and bring it into being - beautiful crafted. Thanks so much.

Thanks for this interesting conversation. During the conversation (early) Norman Vincent Peale and the New Thoughts tradition viz. Trump received a mention, and a reference was made to a book. I believe that the book the speaker was trying to recall was Dark Star Rising: Magick & Power in the Age of Trump by Gary Lachman. Lachman is an independent writer who addresses "the history and philosophy of consciousness." In Dark Star Rising he specifically addresses Trump's relationship to Peale and the many permutations of "chaos magic" and the influences of figures like Evola that have currency with the radical right.
